Finding your creative space

Almost by mistake one day, I discovered the importance of creative space. I was up at the office preparing for a Sunday worship service and I fell into “songwriting” mode. During this time an unfamiliar – uneasiness came over me. I stopped to consider what was going on and to look deeper into what I was experiencing, I realized I was feeling boxed in. After further analysis I realized that when I generally write music, I do so in large open spaces. Generally I’m walking around. Being in the tight quarters of my office was not the most ideal environment for creativity to flow. Luckily it was late and no one was at the office. I was able to walk through the halls and have a good experience. J Because of this experience I’ve become more aware of my surroundings and how there affecting my senses. As you step into your creative process I encourage you to be aware of your environment. Surround yourself with things that will springboard you into a creative place. Surround yourself with things that put you at peace. It’s been said that peace is the potting soil for revelation.

PRACTICAL TIPS

Try out different locations – different rooms of your house, outside, the mountains, the ocean – find the places that you feel the most alive
Set the atmosphere – use candles, soft lighting, remove the clutter from your space – the goal here is to find a place of peace
Time of day – if you usually writing in the morning and get stuck…… try writing in the evening and visa versa.
Thinking it through – through out the day if you feel creativity rising in you stop and see what’s going on. Sometimes heaven smiles on us and we just fall into those creative moments – other times we walk into an environment were our creativity lines up with our environment. Discover those places and have them work for you. - JY
